How to choose the right scope for long-range shooting

Long-range shooting (LRS), or precision shooting beyond 300 meters, is a discipline that demands rigor, technique... and perfectly suited equipment. The riflescope plays a central role: it must offer precise target visibility, accurate impact correction, and flawless consistency. But how do you choose the right scope for long-range shooting? Here are the key criteria to consider, and where to find the right models.

Magnification: The Foundation of Precision Shooting

Long-range shooting requires high magnification, typically between 5x and 25x. The farther you shoot, the more zoom you need to see your target clearly. Variable magnification scopes like 5-25x, 6-24x or 8-32x are the most suitable.

Example to check out:

Objective Lens Diameter: Capturing More Light

An objective lens between 50 mm and 56 mm is ideal. It ensures better brightness, especially at high magnifications where the image may otherwise become dark.

Tip : The larger the objective lens, the higher the scope mount must be.

The Reticle: A Calculation Tool, Not Just a Marker

In long-range shooting, a ballistic reticle is essential: it helps compensate for bullet drop and wind drift. Mil-Dot, MOA, or Hashmark reticles are the most commonly used.

Precise Adjustment Turrets

The elevation and windage turrets should be exposed, clearly marked in milliradians (MRAD) or MOA, with audible and tactile clicks. A zero stop feature is a major advantage.

Adjustable Parallax: For Optimal Sharpness

Parallax adjustment is critical to avoid aiming errors at long distances. Make sure the scope offers side parallax adjustment, ideally ranging from 20 meters to infinity.

Durability and Build Quality

Long-range shooting often involves powerful calibers (.308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Win Mag...). The scope must be waterproof, shockproof, and nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging.

🔧 Look for models tested under extreme conditions, such as those from Nightforce, Vortex, Kahles or Leupold.
